What is the difference between life coaching and counseling?

Life Coaches are not licensed mental healthcare practitioners, and therefore cannot diagnose or treat mental health conditions, or submit claims to insurance. Life Coaching is not regulated by the state; Life Coaches may receive training and certification through private coaching schools and may receive credentials by independent coaching organizations, such as The International Coaching Federation (ICF).

While there is some overlap with life coaching and counseling, and both can have effects that are therapeutic (such as reduced stress, a more positive outlook, increased confidence, improved relationships), life coaching differs in that the focus is not so much on spending time processing trauma from the past, but on working through the present with a forward-focus.

Emotions may come up in a life coaching session, but if it appears that the client is in a state of distress such that it interferes with regular daily functioning and/or with the coaching process, the coach may refer the client to a licensed practitioner. Coaches work with clients who are functioning, but may not be thriving or reaching their full potential.

What is a coaching session like?

We will work together to hone in on specific goals you want to achieve, whether that be in personal development, life path, work, or relationships. Coaching utilizes a combination of interviewing and assessments to help the client gain awareness and clarity of their values, gifts and talents, desires, needs, and challenges, and then develop plans and strategies for accomplishing their goals.
